Hey guys, here is a great series of videos explaining why Low speed pre-ignition is called "The Silent GDI engine Killer"

The videos explain causes, prevention, and mitigation procedures in order to keep your GDI engines running as best as possible.

From the videos you will see why GDI engines require and benefit from:

  • Shorter oil change intervals than regular port injection engines (every 3k miles at least).
  • Low detergent content engine oil.
  • Using good quality fuel (top tier gas).
  • High octane fuel.
  • Fuel injector cleaner additives.
  • Higher viscosity oil when using E85.

Curious, it’s always hard to decipher fact from marketing when a vendor is shilling product.

I’m curious to see what Blackstone has to say from my testing, currently using Castrol Edge which supposedly meets SN+.

Any lists of oil that has been accumulated that is good? Vavoline modern engine seems decent but is charging a pretty penny. Maybe to early to know?

Amsoil has been a great performer so far. Have used it on all my vehicles including the Stinger.

As I understood the oils with less amount of calcium will be great.

Mobil 1 extended performance 5w-30
Mobil 1 X1 5w-30
Elf Evolution full tec FE 5w-30

At around 9k miles I was cruising in comfort mode 60 mph, when I changed lanes and stepped on the gas to pass a car and ended up having my first case of what I now think is LSPI.

I depressed the gas pedal about 30-50%, and as the car started to accelerate I suddenly lost power and heard what I'll call back firing or sputtering. This lasted about 5 seconds until I eased off the gas. I did not hear any engine knock tho not sure I would while cruising. It was not a complete loss of power, but felt like a couple cylinders weren't firing or had bad timing.

I paused and accelerated again, this time no problem, and no more issues that entire drive. Since then I've had the same experience multiple times, but not consistently. Most often in low RPM cruising, but not under heavy acceleration. Often it's when just merging into traffic, brisk accelerating from a stop, or giving it some gas on HWY. Very random and inconsistent.

In no way would I say this happens during aggressive driving. I haven't encountered it in Sport mode. It's usually most present when I'm just leisurely cruising around.

No check engine light, no OBD2 codes. It's like it's not happening, but it is. Of course I can't make it do it at will, so I don't stand a chance trying to explain it to the mechanic.

Researching the issue led me to experiment with different gas. Also did a Techron Fuel system cleaner treatment. No difference.

At my next oil change am going to request they use full-synthetic (they used the hybrid oil last two changes unbeknownst to me.) Shame on me for not confirming what they're using on my complimentary oil changes. Hope this is the magic bullet and works!!

My next move was going to be to swap plugs. If that didn't work someone in another forum mentioned fuel pump.

Before reading this thread I never heard of LSPI.

Just posting here in case anyone else has similar experience. Not sure there's anything that can be done? Perhaps the solution to simply modify driving behavior which would be sad, since this was not an issue for the first 9k miles of driving.
